Foreign Middle-aged Women Providing Sexual Services to Korean Older Men

Abstract

|
This study examined the circumstances surrounding female foreigners’ decision to trade sex for money in Korea. Five Chinese women who have worked in the sex trade for the Korean older men in Jongro district in Seoul participated in individual in-depth qualitative interviews. Interviewer recruited them through street outreach. The main reason why they chose the sex trade work was financial difficulties due to losing their initial jobs in Korea. According to their statements, they suffered from so much personal aggrievement from the older men while they were providing illegal sexual services. They also complained of possible STD symptoms. The implications of these findings were discussed in terms of eradicating sex trade as well as setting up a culture of a healthy sexuality for the older men through civic education.
